Installation Requirements

The requirements for installing and using ALS are outlined below.

Server Requirements

The server machine runs the Altiva Licence Server as a Windows Service, which means it must be running at least Windows 2000 or higher (XP, Vista or Server 2000/2003/2008 versions are all supported). Additionally, the appropriate TCP/IP networking protocol needs to be installed, and the "Tcpip" service needs to be installed and running. These requirements are all usually met by any standard installation of Windows. The firewall on the server may also need to be configured, see the "Firewall requirements" below.

Once installed, Altiva Licence Server will automatically restart when the machine is rebooted. This means there is minimum administration requirements on the server side.

Client Requirements

Apart from the TCP/IP protocol and the firewall settings explained above, there are no special client requirements. The client-side support for pooled licensing is contained within the client application itself.

Firewall Requirements

By default most firewalls will block all ports except those used for email and internet access. Therefore in order for ALS to function correctly, a dedicated port must be opened in the firewall on both the client and the server. This port is set to 1999 by default, however the port number is configurable if this is either unavailable or already in use. For the machine acting as the server, the ALS dialog has the option to automatically configure the frewall. However, the clients may still need to be configured as both the server and the client have to be able to communicate over the port. If you are using the standard Windows XP or Vista built-in firewall, then follow these steps to disable the port to allow ALS to function properly:

1. Open the Windows Control Panel and choose "Windows Firewall"

2. In the "General" tab page, ensure the firewall is "On" and that "Don't Allow Exceptions" is turned "Off"

3. In the "Exceptions" tab page click the "Add Port" button

4. Give the exception a meaningful name, such as "Altiva Licence Server"

5. Enter the port number, which should be 1999 unless you want to use a different port number

6. Choose "TCP" for the protocol and press "OK"

7. You have now opened the port on the server

Note that you may need to repeat these steps on each client computer that should communicate with the Altiva Licence Server.
